Step 1: Rename msgstore.db.crypt12 to msgstore-latest.db.crypt12. It will change the new backup file as you are changing the name of the old backup file.

Now, uninstall WhatsApp. If you have created a backup by enabling Google Drive backups then to restore the backup file you need to open the Google Drive app, tap on menu button and then choose the backup. You will find the WhatsApp backup file containing a phone number with it. Then tap on three vertical dots and select Delete backup to remove it.
This will prevent WhatsApp from using Google Drive backup file and it will restore from the local file that you wish to recover.
Now, again install WhatsApp from Google Play Store. Set up your phone and during this, you will be asked to restore the backup file that you have renamed. You can see this as X days old in the place of the most recent backup file.
